May has arrived although with the weather as its been it feels more like March has just arrived.

Nontheless insect hatches will continue to follow their usual pattern and I always refer to May as a “black month”.  Expect to see falls of Black Gnats, Hawthorn Flies and other small black terrestrials so ensure you are armed with plenty of suitable imitations, even if there are no naturals on the water the fish will be locked into feeding on them.  If fishing a team of North Country Spiders at this time of year for example I would always have one black fly on the cast, usually a Stewart’s Black Spider which is one of the truly great traditional spider patterns.
