The grayling know affectionately as the “Lady of the Stream”, not surprisingly loves the colour pink.

Pink flies or flies with an element of pink in them work really well for grayling so try adding a pink bead or pink tag to your nymphs or include a pink spider in your cast of spiders or add one to a dropper when nymphing.  Grayling also have a great attraction for peacock hearl and the combination of the two is a winning formula, tie a simple bead head nymph with a pink bead and tag and peacock hearl body.

Grayling also love Aphids so ensure you have some suitable patterns in your box, I use again a simple but effective pattern on a size 22 tied with a short body of chartreuse Ice Dub and a cream or ginger cock hackle short in the flue.  My old pal Bernard Benson swore that grayling sucked Aphids off fallen leaves in the autumn, if he was correct or not I don’t know but it wouldn’t surprise me!
