Superb dry fly sport in Yorkshire

Yesterday (13th May) I had a superb afternoon’s dry fly sport.  After spates in recent days I knew the Yorkshire rivers could be about perfect so I thought I must take advantage of the conditions and go fishing.  I had the whole stretch to myself and  moved slowly, looking for rising fish and mostly only cast when I’d spotted one.  Click here to read more

Early Insects, Early Spring.

Wild "Wharfer" 2lb 2oz

The early spring fishing in 2014 in the Yorkshire Dales has been a complete contrast to last year, last year ultra low temperatures until mid May and this year following an exceptionally mild winter and a warm/early spring this year, many of the insects both aquatic and terrestrial have been hatching/emerging early. Windy Wharfe!

Last Wednesday on the River Wharfe at Burnsall wasn’t the easiest day for repeat guided client Dave Farrer due to a very strong and cool downstream wind which until early afternoon was probably close on gale force. Click here to read more

A great day at Fewston Reservoir, Yorkshire

Scenic Fewston Reservoir near Harrogate has proved to be an excellent fly fishing tuition water for me this spring and summer and my day there on Saturday 7th September was another such day.

Dad David Armitage has an enthusiastic budding fisher son William, twelve.  We met at 8.30am and after a preparatory discussion about fly fishing, safety, etc. we set off to the waterside for me to teach them fly casting and then fly fishing.  Click here to read more

River Wharfe - Burnsall Near Where The Popeye Fly Incident Occurred

Overall the fishing in the Yorkshire Dales has been good over the last few weeks with slightly more seasonal weather but a lack of rain has had the rivers on their bones, some of the smaller rivers such as the River Aire are now basically unfishable due to the lack of any decent flow. River Wharfe Fly Hatches

The River Bridge - Burnsall.

One other feature of this season apart from the lousy weather has been the excellent hatches of fly both on the River Wharfe and many other Yorkshire Dales rivers, I saw my first good hatch of Large Dark Olives during a river walk in mid March at Burnsall and great hatches of LDO’s continued from the start of the season and throughout April.
