Grayling Fly Fishing and Long Trotting

Go Fly Fishing UK have particular strengths in providing Grayling fishing days, guiding, tuition and short breaks. Both the directors of the company have been keen Grayling fishers for over 30 years. Steve Rhodes is Chairman of The Grayling Society (see below) and Dave Martin has been an active member for 14 years. Steve and Dave both have a lifetime of experience in fishing for grayling and are both Orvis Endorsed Guides. Steve guides for Grayling in Yorkshire and Dave on the chalkstreams of Hampshire, Berkshire and the Cotswolds. Steve is pictured above right with a 2lb plus Welsh River Wye Grayling caught on a Klinkhamer dry fly.

Many of the rivers we fish have excellent stocks of often large Grayling. In the Yorkshire Dales the rivers Wharfe, Ure and Ribble are classic grayling rivers as are the Southern chalk stream rivers Test, Itchen and Kennet together with the River Coln in the Cotswolds. The Welsh rivers Wye, Irfon, Severn, Dee and Taff also provide superb Grayling fishing and in the Lake District the River Eden and its tributary the River Eamont are excellent.

We can arrange guided Grayling fishing on all these rivers.

Cost

A full guided day of grayling fishing for one person costs from £170 to £200 depending on the water being fished and whether it is a midweek (lower price) or weekend (higher price) day. For groups of two or more fishers the cost per person is much lower. Call or email us for an exact quotation.

What to expect

Grayling offer great sporting opportunities for the river fisher. From late- August to mid-March they provide excellent fishing. As autumn moves into winter the fly fishing methods we use for Grayling change. On the freestone rivers in the north and west dry fly fishing becomes less effective and fishing heavily weighted nymphs and long trotting take over as the preferred methods. On the crystal clear chalk streams in the South of England it is still possible to catch Grayling with dry fly even through the very coldest winter weather. However even here the preferred method is sight fishing with a weighted nymph.

Grayling can be caught on all the standard river fly fishing techniques and the guides at Go Fly Fishing UK can teach you all of these together with the more specialised grayling techniques such as the "induced take", Czech nymph fishing and long trotting. Long trotting is a traditional method of fishing for Grayling using a float and a free-running centre pin reel with a worm or maggot as bait.

So just because the Trout season has ended don’t pack away your fly fishing tackle, give us a call or send an email and we’ll be happy to organise a superb Grayling fishing trip for you.
