Watermark is a single six acre spring-fed lake situated between Cirencester and Swindon in the Gloucestershire Cotswolds. Although just a five minute drive from the A419 dual-carriageway (easy access from the M5 Bristol / Birmingham and the M4 Reading / Bristol) Watermark is a peaceful countryside oasis set in the Cotswold Water Park.
At Watermark Go Fly Fishing UK do fly fishing lessons for complete beginners and improvers tuition for people who can already fish but want to improve their technique and increase their catches. It is an excellent location for both beginners to learn the art of fly fishing and also for already competent fly fishers to have an interesting exciting day learning new techniques of fly fishing. Even beginners will usually catch some good sized Trout during their tuition.
Options are available for both bank fishing and boat fishing.
Whilst the main catch at Watermark is beautiful hard fighting Rainbow Trout there are also some superbBrown Trout in the lake. In 2011 Brown Trout of up to 14lbs were caught here. The lakes fish well in winter and summer.
A 9 foot or 9 foot 6 inch rod for a 6 or 7-weight line is ideal. In the warmer months a floating line is best when for fishing dry flies and light nymphs on or near to the surface. In the cooler months and in very warm summer weather the lake fishes very well to sinking lines. Our instructors will loan all the required fly fishing tackle, flies, etc., or you can bring and use your own. Tackle loan is free included in our normal charge. Normally you should use a minimum 6lb breaking strain tippet because of the strength of the Trout but you may wish to scale down a little and use a fluorocarbon tippet / leader when fishing small flies in bright conditions. Beginners might opt for an 8lb tippet in dull weather conditions to have a better chance of landing the bigger fish. Make sure that you have a decent sized landing net, preferably with an extending handle, and a pair of polarised sunglasses.
Black and Green Buzzers often work well at Watermark fished on a floating line. When the fish are deeper try a sinking line, sink tip or intermediate, with a weighted fly like a goldhead Damsel nymph, Daddy Long Legs or Montana. In the autumn when the fish may be feeding on fry try a white or silver lure. Watermark is an excellent dry fly water and successful dry flies include Grey Wulff, Shuttlecock, olive and black Klinkhamer, Daddy Long Legs and assorted Hoppers. On brighter days walk slowly round the margins looking for fish. Often sight-casting a buzzer, gold ribbed hare’s ear or pheasant tail nymph to these fish will bring excellent sport. In very warm summer conditions the fish are likely to go down deep so be prepared to let your flies sink well down before starting your retrieve.
All our fly fishing instructors are trained and licensed and hold nationally recognised fly fishing coaching qualifications. We do private fly fishing lessons of a full or half-day duration for from one to four people. Our instructor will provide loan of all the required fly fishing tackle, flies, etc., included in our price.
Watermark is an excellent location for corporate fly fishing days. It is possible to book the fishery for exclusive private use and there are a number of catering options available on-site from barbequing the Trout you catch to a full sit down silver service meal. There is a brasserie within easy walking distance and there are also some excellent country inns and restaurants within a short car drive if you’d rather take a lunch break away from the water.
Check out our 'Fly Fishing Lessons' 'Prices - Tuition' web page for full details of all our prices and options. Loan of all the necessary fly fishing tackle, flies, etc. is included in our price as is the fishing permit for the location, your one day fishing rod licence and, if required, local accommodation or railway station collection/return. A full day of private fly fishing tuition for one person in the April to October season costs £199 (half-day £129). Prices are lower in the November to March season and the cost per person is significantly lower for groups of two to four friends, relatives or colleagues.
