The Derbyshire Peak District

The southern part of the Peak District National Park is known as the Derbyshire Dales. This is a limestone area and as such its main rivers – the Derbyshire Wye, Derwent and Dove – are fly rich waters delivering superb fly fishing. The Derbyshire Wye contains a particularly large head of fish. As well as Brown Trout and Grayling it is unique in the UK in having a large population of natural-breeding wild Rainbow Trout. The River Derwent flows down past Chatsworth House to join the River Wye at Rowsley.

In Derbyshire there are also some excellent stillwater Trout fly fisheries such as Carsington Water (between Ashbourne and Matlock), Yeaveley Estate lakes (near Ashbourne), Barlow lakes (near Chesterfield) and Press Manor Trout Fishery (near Chesterfield).

Go Fly Fishing UK offer guided fly fishing days and fly fishing tuition days at all the locations mentioned above.

In early-May 2010 Go Fly Fishing UK co-proprietor Dave Martin had two superb days fly fishing on the Derbyshire Wye at Bakewell and landed 30 wild Rainbow Trout, 4 wild Brown Trout (up to nearly 4lbs) and a few out-of-season Grayling.  And in early-April 2009 he experienced two equally good days of sport landing a total of 16 Rainbows and 15 Brown Trout.  He fished on the Haddon Estate water at Bakewell on three of these days and on the Cressbrook & Litton Flyfishers Club water on one day.  Despite fly fishing for over 30 years Dave views these four days as some of the most enjoyable days fly fishing he has ever had.  In 2010 Dave stayed at the excellent ‘The Haven’ bed & breakfast (www.visitbakewell.com).  This is situated less than a five minute walk from the river and from the centre of Bakewell.  ‘The Peacock’ at Rowsley (www.thepeacockatrowsley.com) is a very special place to stay and to eat and Go Fly Fishing UK clients staying at The Peacock can also be guided on the nearby River Derwent. Guided Grayling fishing days are available on the River Dove.

The area has strong connections to fishing history. Izaak Walton, author of "The Compleat Angler" (1653) lived at Shallowford, near Stone and you can visit his house there which is now a museum. The thatched, half-timbered cottage gives a fascinating insight into the history of angling and the life of a writer whose work remains ‘a unique celebration of the English countryside.’ Wander through the historic rose and herb garden or enjoy the heritage events which are held there regularly. Izaak Walton and Charles Cotton are also thought to have fished the River Dove and the river is mentioned in the "The Compleat Angler".

Other non-fishing information

The Peak District offers excellent walking in stunning countryside scenery and there are interesting towns to visit such as Bakewell, Matlock, Ashbourne and Buxton. As well as the magnificent Chatsworth House and gardens the area also boasts Haddon Hall and rose garden, set right on the banks of the River Wye. The major cities of Sheffield, Manchester, Nottingham, Stoke-on-Trent, Derby and Birmingham are all within easy traveling distance of the main Derbyshire fly fishing locations.

Accommodation in Derbyshire, ideal for fly fishers, varies from top-class country house hotels to friendly B & B’s and self-catering cottages.  We can advise you of the best accommodation options to meet your wishes that are conveniently situated for your chosen fly fishing location.
