Fly Fishing in Lancashire

Fly Fishing in Lancashire

Go Fly Fishing UK provide guided days and fly fishing tuition in the picturesque Trough of Bowland area in Lancashire in the north of England.

Our office in the north of England near Skipton is only 20 miles from the Trough of Bowland and Steve Rhodes, Go Fly Fishing UK co-proprietor has fished the River Hodder and Stocks Fly Fishery for many years. We can provide advice on the fishing, accommodations and other attractions in the area.

The upper River Hodder (pictured above) is a small river but nonetheless holds an excellent stock of Brown Trout and Grayling and has a run of Salmon and Sea Trout. The river is a series of intimate runs and pools providing varied and interesting fly fishing opportunities.

Stocks Fly Fishery is the largest commercial fly fishery in the north of England and compares favourably with some of the big midlands fly fishing reservoirs and holds some superb Brown, Rainbow and Blue Trout. Stocks has a fleet of more than twenty top quality boats fitted with outboard motors and has an excellent on site lodge and tackle shop. Stocks Fly Fishery is by far the best run commercial Trout fishery in the north of England.

The Trough of Bowland really is a beautiful, quiet and unspoilt area and as a Yorkshireman I always joke that if there was any justice it really should have been in Yorkshire!

The Trough of Bowland is in easy reach of Leeds, Bradford, Manchester, Harrogate and York and with a direct rail link to Skipton from London Kings Cross makes it easy to visit even from the south of England.

Cost

A guided day or fly fishing lesson in Lancashire starts from as little as £169 for one person.

What to expect

The River Hodder is a spate river or what the Americans call a freestone river and although the river level is influenced by rainfall Stocks Reservoir does tend to regulate this to a certain extent.

The River Hodder’s mixture of runs and pools makes it ideal for practicing all the usual river fly fishing methods and techniques and in addition the all essential skills of watercraft and line control can be taught here.

Stocks Reservoir is a large water and responds well to all the stillwater fly fishing tactics both modern and traditional. Stocks can be fished from the bank or from one of its excellent boats, both can provide excellent sport although we prefer the more versatile approach that fishing from a boat offers.
