Fly Fishing on the River Hodder

The River Hodder is a hidden gem, running through the beautiful Trough of Bowland in Lancashire the River Hodder offers some excellent opportunities for the fly fisher. The River Hodder has a good stock of wild Brown Trout and Grayling and in addition has a run of Salmon and Sea Trout. Go Fly Fishing UK are able to offer guided fly fishing on two and a half miles of the River Hodder near Slaidburn. The Trough of Bowland is tucked away around 40 minutes drive south west of Skipton and even on busy holiday weekends offers an amazing degree of peace and tranquillity and the countryside here is stunning.

The River Hodder is within easy reach of Leeds, Bradford, Manchester, Harrogate and York and with a direct rail link to Skipton from London Kings Cross makes it easy to visit even from the south of England.

Grayling on the River Hodder

Fish species / seasons

The River Hodder has a good stock of wild Brown Trout and Grayling and a run of Salmon and Sea Trout.

Trout fishing on the River Hodder starts mid March and finishes at the end of September and Grayling fishing starts mid June and finishes in mid March.

Tactics

The River Hodder in this area is a mixture of runs and pools and is ideal Trout and Grayling habitat. Fish can be taken on dry fly, nymph and of course “North Country Spiders”, the varied and interesting water allows the angler to utilise all the modern and traditional fly fishing methods and techniques.

Tackle

For Trout and Grayling fishing a rod of between 8 and 9 feet for a 4-5 weight line (floating) is ideal. Waders with felt or felt studded soles are required and chest high waders are an advantage in certain areas as is a wading staff.

Guides

Our guides in the Yorkshire Dales and Lancashire have many years of fly fishing experience on the River Hodder and can show you the most effective flies, methods and techniques to catch fish there. All tackle including waders and flies can be supplied or if you prefer you can bring your own. Our guides can offer a local railway or hotel collection and return service.
