Fly fishing at Frensham Trout Lakes

Bewl Water

Excellent Trout fly fishing in Wealden Kent

Bewl Water is a large lake of 770 acres situated in beautiful Kent countryside about eight miles south east of Royal Tunbridge Wells and within easy travelling distance of Maidstone, Tonbridge, Sevenoaks, Bexhill, Hastings and south east London. As well as wide expanses of water there are intimate bays and inlets to explore. Over half of its 17 mile shoreline is accessible for fishing from the bank.

The fishing is from the bank or from a boat. The reservoir is popular not just with anglers but also with birdwatchers, ramblers and picnickers. There is a fishing lodge with good facilities and excellent views over the lake.

Fly fishing at Frensham Trout Lakes

Go Fly Fishing UK do private fly fishing lessons of both full and half-days duration at Bewl Water. All tackle including flies can be provided or if you prefer you can bring your own.

Fish species / seasons

Bewl Water is well stocked with both Rainbow Trout and Blue Trout and also contains a good population of Brown Trout. The fishery record for a Rainbow Trout is 18lb 10oz and for a Brown Trout a massive 14lb 10oz.

Bewl Water is open every day from 21st March to 30th November.

A rod between 9’ 6” and 10 feet for a 7-weight line is ideal. In the cooler months of the year an intermediate or slow sinking line is useful to get your flies down to the fish but for most of the May to October season a floating line is all that’s required. Our instructors will loan all the required fly fishing tackle, flies, etc. – or you can bring and use your own. Usually a minimum 6lb breaking strain tippet is recommended. Beginners might opt for an 8lb line in dull weather conditions but in bright conditions in the summer months it might be necessary to go down to a 5lb breaking strain fluorocarbon tippet to increase the frequency of takes.

Bewl Water fishes well for long periods of the year to both dry fly and wet fly. Popular flies include daddies, sedge, hawthorn, buzzers, boobies, and fry patterns. The latter work particularly well, especially when the Trout gorge on the large quantities of fry in the reservoir. Fishing is from either the bank or from a boat.

All our fly fishing instructors are trained and hold nationally recognised fly fishing coaching qualifications. They can provide a local railway station (Royal Tunbridge Wells) or accommodation collection and return service. Both tackle loan and our collection/return service are free included in our normal charge.

A full day of private tuition for one person costs a total of just £199 (half-day £129). Prices are lower in November and March. The cost per person is considerably lower for groups of from two to four friends, relatives or colleagues. Check out our 'Fly Fishing Lessons' 'Prices - Tuition' web page for full details of all our prices and options. If you wish to fish from a boat there will be an additional charge of £20 per person and the maximum group size is two people per instructor.

If you fancy making your fly fishing part of a short-break in the Kent countryside then we can advise you on the best accommodation options.
