Meon Springs is series of four very clear water Trout lakes situated in the South Downs in East Hampshire between Petersfield and Winchester. The lakes are formed by springs coming from the chalk and they provide excellent Trout fly fishing all year round. The alkaline spring fed water provides a very healthy environment for the Trout and dry fly fishing and nymph fishing are both very good according to the season. Meon Springs is an excellent fly fishing environment for both complete beginners to the art of fly fishing and also competent experienced fly fishers.
Meon Springs Trout lakes are situated in Hampshire to the south west of London just 40 miles from the M25 (junction 10 / M3) and around 25 miles south west of Guildford. Facilities at the lakes are superb and include flushing toilets, picnic tables, a large lodge (with dining room), barbeque, fridge, tackle shop, cafe, a camping field and ample car parking. Non-fishers are welcome to visit to watch their friends fish and it is a very peaceful scenic setting to while away a few hours well away from the bustle of normal day to day life. The South Downs Way long distance footpath passes between the lakes and the South Downs setting of the lakes is stunning.
At Meon Springs Go Fly Fishing UK do fly fishing lessons for complete beginners and improvers tuition for people who can already fish but want to improve their technique and increase their catches . Being mostly still water it is an ideal learning environment and Meon Springs gives everybody a very good chance of catching some good sized Trout during their tuition. Note that we do not provide just day rod access to fish without a guide/instructor.
The main fish in the lakes are good sized hard fighting Rainbow Trout, although the lakes also contain Brown Trout, some of which are large. The lakes are open for fishing throughout the year as there is no closed season in the UK for Rainbow Trout in lakes. In the warmer months the fish mostly swim near the surface and are easy to spot. This makes for exciting, if at times frustrating, fishing. In the cooler months of the year the fish swim deeper although they can usually still be spotted in the very clear water. Surprisingly often the colder the weather the better the fish bite. Although it is during the warmer months that the dry fly fishing is excellent as the fish are mostly feeding on or close to the surface. If you want to kill your catch to take it home to eat then you can do. However if you prefer not to two of the lakes are set aside for 'catch & release' if you'd prefer to see your catch swim away happily.
It is not necessary to cast long distances at Meon Springs and a long rod and heavy line is a disadvantage. A 9 foot rod for a 5 or 6-weight rod floating line. Our instructors will loan all the required fly fishing tackle, flies, etc. – or you can bring and use your own. Tackle loan is free included in our normal charge. Usually a 6lb breaking strain tippet is recommended because of the size and strength of the Trout. Beginners might opt for an 8lb line in dull weather conditions but in bright conditions in the summer months it might be necessary to go down to a 5lb breaking strain fluorocarbon tippet to increase the frequency of bites. Make sure you have a decent sized landing net, preferably with an extending handle, and a pair of polarised sunglasses.
During the months from April to October dry flies and small buzzers and nymphs fished on or close to the surface give the best chance of success. In the cooler months a more deeply fished buzzer or lure/attractor fly is likely to bring more bites and fish. Keep an eye out for rising and jumping fish. Try to see what they are feeding on and adjust your technique, flies and fishing spot accordingly.
All our fly fishing instructors are trained and licensed and hold nationally recognised fly fishing coaching qualifications. As well as male fly fishing instructors at Meon Springs we also have an excellent lady fly fishing instructor. She also gives one-to-one lessons at a private estate Trout lake in West Sussex. Go Fly Fishing UK have hosted many hundreds of people at Meon Springs Trout lakes. Everybody loves it and the vast majority catch some good sized Trout. We do private fly fishing lessons of a full or half-day duration for from one to four people. It is also a superb location for Corporate fly fishing days and it is possible to book the fishery for exclusive private use.
A full day of private tuition for one person in the April to October season costs a total of just £199 (half-day £129). Prices are lower in the November to March season. The cost per person is considerably lower for groups of from two to four friends, relatives or colleagues. Check out our 'Fly Fishing Lessons' 'Prices - Tuition' web page for full details of all our prices and options. Note that we do not provide just day rod access to fish without a guide/instructor.
