The River Itchen is not as famous as its neighbour the Test but it is every bit as good. It is situated only around 70 miles south west from central London and is very easy to get to from London either by car or by train. It provides superb Brown Trout and Grayling fly fishing on its beats situated near to Winchester and downstream towards Southampton. The M3 motorway takes you south westward from London directly to the river. Also fast trains connect London Waterloo station with Winchester and our guide would collect you from there if you'd rather take a train than drive out. The surrounding countryside is stunning with many interesting ancient features.
The River Itchen is a small to medium sized mostly fairly narrow and very clear river. It contains wild and stocked Brown Trout and wild Grayling and in the downstream reaches also boasts a good run of Atlantic Salmon. Often it is possible to sight cast to the Trout - very exciting! It has a particularly rich food supply for the fish with a superb hatches of a number of different types of mayfly and caddis. Excellent fly fishing is available on the River Itchen from mid-April right through to the end of January (it is closed from 1st February to mid-April).
Go Fly Fishing UK do guided days and fly fishing tuition days at a number of excellent locations on the River Itchen from just upstream of Winchester downstream to just upstream of Southampton. As well as male fly fishing guides/instructors on the River Itchen we also have an excellent lady fly fishing guide. She also gives one-to-one lessons at Trout lake locations in Hampshire and West Sussex. Our Chalk Streams River Itchen web page contains more detail on what to expect when taking a day on this river, tackle, tactics, prices, etc. Our days start at £199 for a day for one person in the autumn/winter Grayling season and from £345 for a day in the spring/summer Trout fishing season. Contact us for a specific quote for your required date and number of people. We do not provide just day rod beat access to fish without a guide/instructor.
How about coming out of London for a short break. Local to the river are many great accommodation options including manor house hotels, country hotels, inns and bed & breakfasts. The ancient city of Winchester is the perfect base for fishing the Itchen and for visiting the surrounding area. "Dave, Thank you for two great days. Just what I'd hoped and pictured they'd be. The Itchen fishing will stay with me because the place was so perfect. Three of my best pics are of that beautiful tree on the right bank we fished under, the run below the weir and that almost 20" brown. "
