Fly Fishing in Mid Wales

The upper River Severn, the upper River Wye and their tributaries

Go Fly Fishing UK provide guided days, fly fishing tuition and short breaks in the stunning countryside of Mid Wales.

We have an excellent fly fishing guide/instructor based in mid Wales; he has fished in mid Wales for 45 years and fly fished there for over 35 years. He has fished on the upper River Severn for all of that time and has more than 20 years fly fishing experience on the River Wye and its tributaries. We are also able to provide advice on the fishing, accommodations and other attractions in mid Wales.

Fly fishing in Wales

The upper River Severn (pictured above) is a truly great fly fishing river and has excellent stocks of Brown Trout, Grayling and the occasional Salmon. The Grayling fishing on the upper Severn is exceptional and the river produces some extremely large fish. The River Wye is perhaps historically one of the most famous Welsh fly fishing rivers once legendary for its run of huge Salmon. Although the Salmon fishing is not what it was they still run the river and compliment the superb fishing for Brown Trout and Grayling.

Some of the River Wye tributaries such as the Elan, Marteg, Irfon and Ithon are equally important Brown Trout and Grayling fisheries in their own right. There are many stillwaters in mid Wales ranging from small wild Brown Trout lakes to large reservoirs with a mix of Rainbow and Brown Trout, the choice is huge. In addition mid Wales offers a host of other activities such as shooting, pony trekking, quad biking, golf and of course walking.

Mid Wales is within easy reach of Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol and Cardiff and has good rail links to the main towns in the area.

Cost

A guided day or fly fishing lessons in mid Wales starts from as little as £164 for one person.

What to expect

Stunning scenery, from the more rolling hills and mellow countryside of the River Severn valley to wonderfully remote and more rugged landscape at the top of the River Wye system. All the rivers in mid Wales are rain fed and therefore are spate rivers, they are a mixture of runs, pools, riffles and glides and lend themselves perfectly to all fly fishing techniques both modern and traditional. Upstream dry fly or nymph, North Country Spider fishing, Czech nymphing are just a few of the methods practiced here to great effect. The varied nature of the water makes them ideal rivers for honing those all essential skills of water craft and line control.

Happy Clients

“Tom and I would like to thank you for a really brilliant day on Tuesday. Not only did we thoroughly enjoy ourselves but we learned a great deal from you – thank you very much. Our experience that day certainly outstripped our expectations and catching some trout and grayling as well made it really memorable. A fantastic day – we are very grateful to you”
