The upper River Severn (pictured above) meanders through some of the most stunning scenery in Wales. The river is rain fed and is a mix of runs, long riffles and pools, all in all ideal fly fishing water. The wading on the fine gravel bottom is some of the easiest you will come across which is a great plus if you’re a novice fly fisher or inexperienced wader.
The river level is normally good for fishing in the summer months as the flow is controlled by Llyn Clywedog which makes for excellent fishing even in drought conditions and additionally after heavy rain the river drops very quickly. Insect life is abundant and there are some superb fly hatches throughout the year, notably Grannom, Stone (Needle) flies and a large number of upwinged flies (Mayfly).
The dry fly fishing can be excellent even well into the winter months given decent weather conditions.
If you prefer small river/stream fishing then the Afon Carno and Afon Trannon are ideal and provide the opportunity to fly fish for truly wild Brown Trout.
The River Severn has good stock of wild Brown Trout supplemented by some stocking. The river has a large head of Grayling and produces some exceptionally large specimens and the Grayling fishing here must be amongst the best in the country. There are also a few Salmon, you may be lucky and come across one! Brown Trout fishing on the river Severn starts on the 3rd March and finishes on the 30th September, Grayling fishing starts on the 16th June and continues throughout the winter until the 14th March.
A rod of between 9 and 10 feet for a 4 or 5 weight floating line would be perfect for Trout and Grayling fishing on the Severn with a rod of between 7 and 8 feet with a 3 or 4 weight floating line being more appropriate for the Carno or the Trannon. Wading is easy but we would always recommend the use of a wading staff and ideally chest high waders with felt soles and studs.
The River Severn is the perfect fly fishing river and with many miles of fishing available together with varied water speeds and depths makes it ideal for virtually any of the fly fishing methods and techniques we use today.
Our full time guide and qualified fly fishing instructor on the River Severn is highly experienced and has fly fished this river for more than 35 years, there is nobody who knows the river and its resident Trout and Grayling any better.

“Having just returned from my week in Wales I wanted to write and let you know how much I enjoyed the couple of days I spent on (but perhaps that should be in!) the Severn. You are a great instructor, a good communicator, extremely patient, excellent at explaining technique and miraculously making me do it successfully. I very much look forward to returning for more instruction next summer”
