Fly Fishing on Gouthwaite Reservoir
Gouthwaite Reservoir is located in upper Nidderdale near the pretty market town of Pateley Bridge and is a particularly scenic reservoir covering some 365 acres. Gouthwaite Reservoir is a nature reserve and a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and of particular interest to bird watchers. Fly fishing at Gouthwaite Reservoir is from the bank only and is restricted to syndicate members and their guests, Go Fly Fishing UK are are able to offer a strictly limited number of days on this beautiful and unique water.
Gouthwaite Reservoir is within easy reach of Leeds, Bradford, Manchester, Harrogate and York and with a direct rail link to Skipton from London Kings Cross makes it easy to visit even from the South of England. Gouthwaite Reservoir is unusual in that it is one of only two stillwaters in the UK where you can catch Grayling, the brown trout have never been stocked and are all wild fish.
Fish species / seasons
Gouthwaite Reservoir holds a good population of self sustaining wild Brown Trout and very unusually for the UK, Grayling.
Trout fishing on Gouthwaite Reservoir starts on the 1st of April and finishes at the end of September.
Tackle
A rod between 9 and 10 feet for a 5 or 6 weight line (floating) is ideal. Long casts are not usually required at Gouthwaite and in true wild brown trout style most of the fish lie very close to the shore.
Tactics
The Brown Trout of Gouthwaite Reservoir live and act like wild Brown Trout should, they are opportunists and favour the more traditional patters with small and black being the best rule of thumb. Dry flies also work well and if there are natural flies on the surface sure as eggs are eggs fish will be taking them. Gouthwaite has a good Mayfly hatch and fish are taken on both wet and dry imitations. The Grayling respond to similar tactics although tend to favour certain areas of the reservoir.
Guides
Fishing at Gouthwaite is limited to syndicate members and their guests and Steve Rhodes can take a strictly limited number of guests who must be accompanied. All tackle including flies can be supplied or if you prefer you can bring your own. Steve can provide a local railway station collection and return service and is available to give you a guided tour of the many historic sites, towns and cities and the many other attractions in the Yorkshire Dales.
